Did you know that 17.9% of the adult population in Charlotte County is functionally illiterate? This means that nearly one out of five adults in Charlotte County does not have adequate reading, writing, comprehension and computer skills to function successfully in the workplace and in our community. Many of those adults are seeking help with their literacy skills from the Adult Learning Center. The role of the volunteer tutor is a crucial one in helping students achieve their goals. Some students participate in our programs so that they can obtain their GED or enter an occupational program at Charlotte Technical Center. Other students want to work on their skills so that they can help their children with their homework. Still others want to develop their English language skills. “One size fits all” is not an approach that works for our students, and supplementing their work at the Center with one-on-one assistance from a tutor greatly increases their ability to improve their skills and achieve their goals.
Tutors meet with their students in public libraries and other public locations. (Click here for information about some of the tutoring locations that are available in our community.)
