Become a Volunteer Tutor

The Adult Learning Center has a vibrant volunteer tutor program pursuant to which trained tutors work with English language learners and adult basic education students.  This approach melds the literacy volunteers model  of developing adult literacy with its emphasis on one-on-one learning and the classroom model and has proven to be highly effective.   The only prerequisites to becoming a tutor are a desire to help an adult learner and a willingness to spend at least one hour per week with your student.  We ask that tutors commit to working with their students for a minimum of three months in order to ensure continuity for the student and allow the tutor an opportunity to develop his or her tutoring skills.  There is no requirement that tutors have a teaching background or speak a foreign language.  We provide training on how to work with an adult learner (including how to tackle your first meeting and how to develop lesson plans) and provide on-going support.  Snowbirds are welcome!

Our next tutor training session will be held on Saturday, February 4th, from 10:00 – 1:00 at the Adult Learning Center location at the Port Charlotte Town Center Mall.  Contact Nanette Crist at 255-7555 to register.
